50+ Baby Boomers Get Discounts Even Before Retirement Age!

Ask for discounts before retirement age

First, what is the retirement “age”?  Until the recent economic downturn, retirementthe universal answer in the U.S. had officially been retirement starts at 65.  Now the previous accepted norm is in a state of flux with many boomers opting to continue working as long as possible holding back on retirement for many different reasons.

Well, stretching the dollar is still possible and in some cases necessary for us 50+ baby boomers. Recently, I received the following text from a friend, it read, “As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy’s recently, I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 get 10% off everything on the menu, every day.  Being of ‘that’ age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too.” She went on to say that she got her discount. I thought to myself, How very interesting!

So what is the retirement age really?

This incident prompted me to do some research. Of course I did a Google search retirementand came up with a number results showing places listing Senior discounts.  Click here to see the site I found and liked the best. This one had a pretty big list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and how some of them start at the young age of 50. So it looks like in the real world of retail today, the retirement age is, for the most part, 50 years old. This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family, too. One example that really surprised me was that Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55. If you’re paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for free.

The Retirement age discount disclaimer

Very understandably this was written at the bottom of the list.

“Since many senior discounts are not advertised to the public, our advice to men and women over 55 is to ALWAYS ask a sales associate if that store provides a senior discount. Also, please note that some senior discounts vary by region.” So if you are anything like us, no matter what your financial situation is, if you are over 55, don’t hesitate to ask. That way, you can be sure to get the most bang for your buck either before or after retirement,

Well that’s it for now. There will be more to follow.

About Margaret

I retired in 2004 from Broward County Library as a Youth Services Librarian for 15 years. My husband, Joel, and I sold everything except "treasures", bought a Class-A motorhome and started touring America. What a retirement lifestyle. When the economy went "south", we started an Internet marketing business to supplement SS and a modest pension. From 2005-10 we were seasonal cast members at Walt Disney World during the winter months. What a blast! In 2010 we paused our full-time travel to take care of my elderly and ill in-laws in Ft. Lauderdale. Mom died last year. We are now a "trio" in many ways. Ft. Lauderdale is home for now. Vacationers in Style, our business, specializes in creating richness in people's lives. It is our commitment to actively support and coach our partners to build successful businesses.
