Life in Retirement – Caring for Elderly Parents

Change comes again!

Our life in retirement has changed once again. My dad was released from the hospital about two months ago. At 91 he is basically happy with sitting around most of the time. He lives in an independent living facility here in Ft. Lauderdale. He goes down for breakfast and dinner, plays bingo,  and cards. Sometimes we hear about the shows on Saturday night. Not really a lot of exercise.

Let me backtrack a bit and tell you about the hospital stay. About 2 weeks prior, he started to have a pain in his foot. When you have a foot problem you connect with a foot doctor which is what we did. It turned out that was not the issue at all. What happened was a blood clot went down into his leg from his heart and lodged above the knee. No circulation and big time problems emerged. BUT my Pops did not complain again for two weeks. On a Saturday we called his primary physician who told us to get him to the ER. Monday he had surgery to remove the clot from the main artery but because it was almost 2 weeks later some of the smaller arteries are still blocked.  Talk of amputation really scarred us.  Surgical success required a complete change in his meds and activities.

Life in retirement – What now?

Life in retirement gives us another change in our job description:activity directors. No increase in pay but definitely more to do. What happens now is Pops should walk at least 15 minutes 3 times a day and exercise on the stationary bike in the “gym” at his home. Will he do that if we leave him alone? I really don’t think so. So Margaret and I go to him and walk with him–up and down the hall. He calls the stationary bike his “motorcycle”. No matter what, he hs a sense of humor. Getting prescriptions filled at the VA is a chore but worth the time and effort.

Caregivers need support

How am able to do all of this? How am I able to keep my head in this trying time for my dad? How do we stay focused on my dad rather than on us? Sure I would rather be in my RV traveling the country. Sure I would like to have more time to play. Wouldn’t you who are also caring for your elderly parents? So how does that happen? Good questions all.

First I am staying connected with friends and family. That is very, very, very important as caring for our elderly parents can be the source of great suffering when doing it all alone. It doesn’t matter if my friends are physically nearby or not. Just talking to them on the phone helps a lot. In my circle of friends, a few are in the same boat as I am and are also taking care of parents. Great people to talk to when this job gets overwhelming.

Internet marketing affords flexibility

The next important thing is I work from home in an internet marketing business. I work whenever I want to and I have no worries about money as the result of that business.  Retirement is a state of mind.  Lounging at the pool and playing golf are relaxing indeed.  Making and keeping money to support our lifestyle is as energizing as the exercise program I follow daily.

It’s almost 11am as I write here and I need to get over to be with my Pops.  I’m so happy he is still with us.  So thankful for the time we have together.

Caregivers still working for the paycheck

Discrimination in the workplace can occur to anyone who is taking care of elderly relatives. Sometimes us baby boomers are both raising children and assisting elderly relatives.  As medical science allows for continued extension of our lives, someone must care for the aging relatives. Facilities like assisted living are costly and the best care occurs when family is active in the residents’ lives.  Federal and state policymakers must make some accommodations for family caregivers.  Also, individuals must look to their own financial and physical care.  A home based business and regular exercise supports us.  We rarely feel overwhelmed.  Creating a stream of income during retirement is quite beneficial.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned, there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

Don’t Forget to Keep Up Your Routines!

Pause or stop!

As a retired couple, we are committed to staying vibrant and healthy. We exercise for at least 45 minutes 5-6 days a week.  This morning routine is invigorating.  After breakfast we have a 15-minute business meeting to organize our day’s activities.

When my parents were both in the hospital at the same time last year, our world stopped. We stopped going to the gym. We stopped blogging. We stopped playing on our Facebook pages. We even slowed down our business routine. We stopped most of our routines! I think that if we had adjusted our time, we easily could have stayed up to date. We forgot to take care of ourselves.

We had such a hard time getting back into those routines. A month ago my Pops developed blood cots in his left leg–very serious.  This time we actually took the time to discuss pausing our exercise routine.  Shifting gears had us be better prepared to assist Pops when he came home from the hospital and keep the momentum of our business going strong.

The airlines say something like this. “You have to put on the oxygen mask on yourself first before you put the mask on anyone you’re traveling with or both will die.”

I’m not Seth Godin but I can suggest this message for today: Please don’t forget to take care of yourself so you can be there for anyone else.  This message is so important for business associates as well as family especially when you have a network marketing business.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

What Else May Be Required to Earn Money While RVing?

Required or optional

It’s Saturday morning with clear sky and the temp outside is a balmy 78 degrees at 9AM.  Florida winters are a blessing.  We think south Florida has two seasons, namely, summer and not summer.  Cold occurs so seldom and for such short periods it’s hard to call it winter.

Margaret and I are going out for a walk. It’s a new route for us so I don’t know how long it will be but my guess is about 5 miles.  I like my Ipod and music while Margaret likes hearing the sounds of our environment as we walk.

Longevity in our genes

I think that one of our key ingredients for financial success is to stay fit. No matter where you start out daily exercise is very important.  Daily is the key.  In inclement weather we head for the gym.  Now that we qualify for medicare and have an advantage plan, Silver Sneakers makes gym membership possible for all us over 65.

If we keep fit we will live longer and really be able to really enjoy our financial success.  Both of us have longevity in our genes. Medical marvels are greatly prolong life. No one wants be confined to a wheelchair existing on oxygen and medicines during our 80s and 90s!  Exercise is the key to vibrancy.

Have a great day.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

RVing Full-time Requires Organizational Skills

Sitting in the doctor’s office

The other day we were sitting in  our doctor”s waiting room.  It’s so great that you can give blood and other fluid samples the week before your annual physical.  Test results can be reviewed during the actual physical.

Silly me, I forgot to bring a book to read. So I picked up a magazine to read.

Ho Hum.

I read this article in Diabetes on the health watch page. It was titled

Go out of your way for fitness

“Ditch your desk chair. Stash your shoes in a different closet than your clothes. Hide your most-used appliances on a high shelf. These minor inconveniences can serve as a workout in disguise and could be just as effective as hitting the gym for cutting the risk of heart disease and improving overall health.”

You never know where some good input will come from. My wife, Margaret, and I exercise 4-5 days a week for about 45 minutes a session.  RVing lends itself nicely to exercising.

Have a great and healthy day!!!

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

Life in Retirement–a Civic Duty

Life in retirement–voting rights

Most seniors treasure their right to vote.  There is a consciousness of the costs of insuring

Uncle Sam wants you!

our democracy.  We have WW II vets, Korean vets, Vietnam vets, current military and current Iraq and Afghanistan vets and their families living full lives in this country.  Many gave “their full measure of devotion”.  They gave and give to insure we can vote, to insure we can live by our constitution.

Every citizen 18 years of age and older has the opportunity to vote.  Will they register and vote?  I hope so.

Life in retirement–political ads

2012 choice

The election is mere days away.  Already many feel like screaming when you hear one political ad after another, especially if you live in a battle ground state. Think of what you are saying about our democracy.  Discussing political issues at home, in the senior center, in the diner, over bingo and during luncheons, confirms us as Americans.  A lot is riding on this election that directly affects seniors.  Be informed and carry the message of your informed opinion to others in a respectful manner.  No one likes a bully, verbal or otherwise.

Life in retirement–influence on future generations

Kids really get voting creates equity.

If you are just lazy and don’t register to vote, your positions on issues don’t really matter.  Many of us are in the “sandwich” generation.  Our attitude about the issues influences our children and grandchildren.  Grandkids can understand the concept of voting and making their voice heard.  Perhaps Grandpa/Grandma can and do take a vote to decide simple questions such as which flavor ice cream and toppings for dessert, or DVD to watch.  Kids really get it.  What do we want to teach them about the basic premise of our country? Everyone has an equal voice!  Let the grandkids know that they are learning how to decide issues and, ultimately, take care of us and their parents by voting in future elections for candidates they deem will support their views.

Life in retirement–responsible citizenship

High school civics class vote

I encourage everyone–senior, baby boomer, parent, grandparent, adult, teenager, generation X–to nurture an interest in civic affairs.  Make yourself stay present to the political culture, the political ads, the political debates and the political issues on the local, county, state and federal levels. Involving our families in politics helps us all understand the world is bigger than just our home and community.  Plants seeds now that will grow and produce mature individuals who will step out and make positive changes in our world.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

Earn Money While Rving Full-time or Part-time after Retiring?

Retirement is full of options

There are many choices to make as you approach your life in retirement.  What will your life in retirement look like?  Will it change as you age in retirement?  A major choice is creating your address.  Will you move south to avoid winter cold weather?  Will you sell your family home for an apartment locally? Is your family scattered?  Do you want to visit all of them every year?  Do you want to stay with them or nearby in your own space? Will living in an RV fulfill your dreams?  What criteria will you use to decide these all important questions?

earn money while rving

To down-size or not is the question.

Staying put has many advantages. You already know the neighborhood hangouts, grocery stores, shopping malls, places of worship, the library, etc.  No need to find new medical or dental facilities. Family and friends are there or you already know how to connect.  It is easy to stay.  Only need to pack up and move if you transition from a family home to another residence. “Staycations” (local trips of 3 days or less) or day trips and actual vacations, at least an over-night distance away, are cost-effective options for those who want some travel.

If you are 50 years old or more, this is the time to start the planning process for your life in retirement. Receiving your first issue of AARP Magazine and your AARP membership card is your wake-up call to start the planning process. You may smile or even laugh at this assertion. Those who heed this advice will be prepared and proactive in their lives.  Myths such as retirement is an age (65 to be exact) and Social Security plus Medicare will cover expenses need to be demystified. 15 years occurs in the blink of an eye, metaphorically  speaking.  Your address is a very important choice in your life in retirement.

To earn money, even passively, in retirement is exciting!

Down-sizing is indeed popular and an excellent way to “earn money” on many fronts.  Less maintenance costs, less property taxes and money from sales on Ebay and/or garage sales are passive income strategies in retirement.  Rving full-time saves on taxes if your rig is registered in a state with no income tax.  After all, it is your home.

RVing full-time or part-time is also cost-effective for those who want to travel. Bringing earn money while rvingyour “residence” with you keeps your expenses to a minimum.  Hotels and restaurants drain the coffer.  Friends and/or grandchildren can caravan with or meet you at the destination.  Campgrounds are always some version of Mayberry, RFD.  Do you remember the Andy Griffith Show?

A legacy for grandchildren while RVing?

When Joel and I started RVing full-time, we really didn’t give much thought to what we were going to leave behind  for our 6 grandchildren. I have a doll and bone china tea-cup collection and  Joel had a earn money while rvingTinkerbell trading pin and Disney animated movie collection. That was about it along with our 36 ft. motorhome. When we retired a legacy to leave them was just about the last thing on our minds. I thought the real prize was the motorhome. After all, they would have memories of visits and magical vacations with us.

We do have a 401k which perhaps like yours has slowly but surely become a 101k. It wasn’t in our plans to leave much money, if any, to our grandchildren. In 2004 at retiring, it was our plan to really live not just survive and pass away at the ripe old age of 105. By 2010 the 401k now IRA plus Social Security, pension and passive income through lifestyle turned out to be less than what we projected to need to sustain us through our 80s and 90s. From 2004 to 2010 we earned money for extras in various ways including Ebay sales and being seasonal cast members at Walt Disney World. Now to earn more than needed became our quest.

Earning money while RVing is such fun!

Joel and I live life fully, optimistically and joyously.  As we looked for a business several criteria became essential.  It could not be reselling a consumable like cleaning products or make-up because storage is limited in our RV.  Being mobile 12 months a year the connecting with customers/associates. We want portable assets not storage liabilities.  What to do?  Where to look?  The Internet became our logistical savior! We now accumulate assets while making money! The money lets us live the lifestyle we want.

Choices, choices abound as you peruse the whole issue of your life in retirement!

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

Is a Home Business Viable for the Full Time RVer?

Is There Enough? Will I Run Out?

Tomorrow morning I have to pay my RV insurance. I will call the agent and give her my credit card number and will continue my insurance. I have to keep my present RV insurance because it contains a total replacement clause. Since my RV is more than 5 years old ( I think that is the reason) any change for another less expensive policy will result in  limited replacement not 100%. So no looking to save any money there. Once again at the mercy of an insurance company. Can you relate?

I don’t know about you, but always looking to save and skimp is not the way I dreamed my live would be about after I retired. Since the economy changed we have been looking to add to our fixed income. Are you living on a fixed income too? If you are you may be able to relate to the struggles to make ends meet.

Is Cost Cutting becoming a Way of Life?

Before the economy change we used to go out to eat often. Gas buddy is now an app on my smartphone. One of my grandchildren almost only communicates via text, so the smartphone. By the way there is nothing wrong with paying less for gas or fuel, it’s only bad when it becomes an obsession.Always looking for deals can sometimes be very tiring and boring, especially if it’s because of necessity rather than for fun.

We saved money going from a medicare supplement to an advantage plan but those of you know it is not nearly as easy if your in need of a specialist. But worrying if we are going to have enough money to make it thru the end of the month when my credit card comes due. Will there be enough in the checking account to cover the auto payments that come out of the checking acount monthly. Always having to watch everything.

Is This What Retirement is Supposed to be Like?

When we retired in ’04 and became full time in our RV we anticipated a life of adventure, joy, happiness, fun and pleasure. For a few years we had all that and much more. Of course you know what happened about 5 years ago and all that started to change. Suddenly everything changed. Everything! So the question for us became what can we do about the skimping?  It had become a real pain in the butt. So my original question was is a home business a viable option for a full or part time RVer. I do think so, but there are other alternatives to being a miser or penny pincher and corner cutter or well you get the picture. In coming blog posts I will discuss our experience with a number of alternatives to making sure we don’t run out of money and be able to continue the lifestyle we love. So please stay tuned.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

Life in Retirement – Feeing Guilty?

Life in retirement – Life keeps on coming

During Margaret and my life in retirement we have had to deal with many sometimes strange  and unusual twists and turns. life in retirementThe latest has to do with my 91 year old father and our desires to go back to our full time RV lifestyle. He had a blood clot in his leg which cut off most of his circulation from mid-thigh down. With medication and physical  therapy he now has circulation to his lower calf. Unfortunately there still is no circulation in his foot, and there is some pain in his big toe which is not good news. We go see him every day now to put nitroglycerin patches on his foot to help open up the blood vessels in his foot.

So he is getting better but not nearly better enough to be good. My, our dilemma is we want him to get better so there will be no talk about amputation but at that same time the thought occurs that wouldn’t it be nice to have this be the end of his life so we could go back on the road and resume living the lifestyle we have grown to love.

Life in Retirement – What to do?

life in retirementLife in retirement has me feel guilty about many things. The struggle with my father and my RV life. The struggle with living my, our life and helping our children and grandchildren. These are some of the really important issues we are facing in our life in retirement. There are some others as well that are not much of a big deal. They happen almost every day in the living of life. The question becomes how do I want to deal with the circumstances of my life? Do I want to deal with them with peace of mind or do I want to deal with them in turmoil? I think we all, like me want to deal with life with a certain amount of peace of mind.

Life in Retirement – How do I do that?

That may be the most important question to ask in my life in retirement. First I have a few important things to remember:

  1. How important is it really?
  2. Am I pole vaulting over ant hills?
  3. Am I really obligated?
  4. Is this my decision?
  5. What will happen if I do?
  6. What will happen if I don’t?
  7. Is my decisions based on what someone else will think of me?
  8. Will I feel better about my decisions?
  9. Will I remember this problem a year from now, a month from now or even tomorrow?

All very good questions I have to ask myself in deciding what to do next. All I can say is that somehow or another I believe that no matter what I do it will all work out. That any time I forget that my self make suffering comes to the forefront. And that is not something I really want for my life in retirement.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

Life in Retirement–the Fountain of Youth?

Life in retirement–so many wrinkles

Life in retirement is fraught with facing realities that we don’t want to face. As we age some biological changes are inevitable. Life expectancy has shifted to late 70s for men and 80s for women. Medical breakthroughs are pushing these numbers back rapidly.  Where is the fountain of youth? Hair will gray and thin no matter what we apply.  Skin will thin and blotchy discoloration may occur no matter what we apply. Laugh lines become sags and wrinkles appear no matter what we apply. Eye sight will diminish despite medical advances.  Hearing will require aid which can be minimized and almost hidden.  The list is endless.  Eventually, reality is grudgingly accepted.

Sometimes I feel assaulted in the check-out line in the supermarket by the magazines for

life in retirement

fountain of youth?
wrinkle creams!

sale.  Airbrushed slim models or actresses with flowing manes, bright eyes, sparkling teeth and flawless complexions smile at me. (Is this how I’m supposed to look? I don’t compare well.)  Bold article headlines speak of diets, fashion tips and make-up miracles that by implication will fulfill my dream to transform my ordinariness into the extraordinary youth on the cover.  A mega-billion dollar industry thrives because I’ve been “told” over and over that looking like a youth is preferable to celebrating my age!  Life in retirement is about being who I want to be and do what I want to do.  Do I want to be a teenager again? NO!

Life in retirement–10 Minutes 10 Years

life in retirement

Dr. Fredric Brandt, author

In 10 Minutes/10 Years: Your Definitive Guide to a Beautiful and Youthful Appearancelife in retirement by Dr. Fredric Brandt, renowned dermatologist, I discovered ways to achieve a youthful appearance, that is, drop 10 years by consistently following a certain procedure for 10 minutes a day for the rest of my life. 10 years puts my skin at 58, not exactly the age of the supermodels in the magazines, but sounds great to me!  I searched for photos of me at age 58.  I like what I see!  At 68—-58 is youthful! Staying 10 years younger as I age is quite the fountain of youth.

The skin is the largest organ in the body.  It gets the most abuse and needs consistent care. That procedure is cleanse, moisturizer and apply sunscreen in the morning then cleanse and moisturizer at bedtime.  It seems too good, easy and cheap to be true.  Yet, every chapter repeats this formula.

Dr. Brandt touts the wonders of yoga.  On p.26 he states “Yoga in its  purest form not only

life in retirement

Boomers doing yoga exercises

opens channels of energy in the body and realigns the joints and organs, …,it trains and liberates the breath…Yoga wakes up the subtle energies in the body, energies that have stagnated from either misuse, lack of use, or some form of trauma.”  This, of course, takes more than 10 minutes daily. Consistency is the key.  Have you ever seen a stout yoga instructor?  Yoga definitely combats arthritis which makes one “feel” old.

Life in retirement–don’t let the sunshine in

life in retirement

sun worshipers beware

Sun exposure gives you wrinkles! Tan is the sun frying the skin! The author asserts there is no such thing as a healthy tan.  That is a myth. Did you know sunscreens degrade in heat and need to be re-applied whether you are at the beach or walking into the grocery store or down a country lane?

Life in retirement–sugar causes aging

On p. 38, the author states “A diet high in sugar, especially foods with the sugar-protein-heat combination, can cause

life in retirement

yummy but wrinkles in process

premature aging. Or worse.”  Sugar-protein-heat means any baked goods.  Dr. Brandt even encourages changing cooking methods from grilling over high heat to low heat methods.  Bottom line, substitute an emotional reward system for comfort foods full of sugar when you are in need of solace.  Sugar lurks everywhere! On p. 46 “As soon as you cut down on sugar, you’ll see an improvement in your skin.  Instead of rewarding yourself with a candy bar, think about rewarding yourself with new, improved skin and a longer, healthier life.”

Life in retirement–supplements

Anti-oxidants fight the damage to skin caused by free radicals.  This chapter is so readable I think I actually understand what free radical are , what they do and how to contain their effects on my body! The 10-minute tips summaries in every chapter are priceless.

The remainder of the book deals with treatments for every skin issue from bags under the eyes to rosacea, from OTC products to physician directed procedures. There is a week of recipes that seem worth trying.  They seem easy to prepare and likely to be flavorful and delicious.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.

Life in Retirement–Re-imagine Your Retirement

Life in retirement–legacy of the past

Social Security instituted in 1935 began a shift in the national consciousness about life in retirement.  Until the passage of this legislation, retirement as a point on a timeline after full-time working until death did not exist. Three was no “age” to begin your life in retirement. Medicare is the second stage of a national social insurance program, administered by the federal government since 1965, that guarantees access to health insurance for Americans ages 65 and older. Obamacare, that is, the Affordable Care Act, signed by President Obama in 2010, is the third stage of national social insurance.

life in retirementHR departments of businesses reinforced the SS retirement benefits age of 65 by instituting 65 as the designated age to possibly receive retirement pensions.  The next cementing of age 65 as the timeline date for retirement came as the result of advertizing by insurance companies to increase sales to those over 55 approaching 65. The focus was to “cushion” retirement. The big push these days is long-term care insurance! The ultimate action that cemented age 65 was the creation of an over-55 community in Sun City, Arizona in the 1950s by Del E. Webb, a real estate developer.  Webb’s advertising campaign appealed to the over-55 crowd who wanted to believe his created lifestyle as nirvana.

Life in retirement–the 2012 economy

life in retirement

Stretching the dollar

Due to financial upheavals in recent years, those approaching 65, age 65 or past 65 do not see this as the magical age when the new life promised will automatically be achieved.  Baby boomers increasingly see a life in retirement as the result of an accumulation of assets not an age designation.  Yet, we still have an entire lifetime of brain messages that 65 is the magical age.  In the 1950s, the economy supported an easy shift to leisure life for the average American.  2012 is a completely different economy.  A gallon of gas in 1950 averaged $.18 while I paid $4.83 today. (Sept. 23, 2012.)  Dollars are devaluing every day.

Life in retirement–creating your future

The magic occurs when each of us chooses to transition to life in retirement. Age is secondary. Each of us

boomers can re-imagine our future.  We can identify our interests, strengths, dreams and bucket lists then put them into action. Age is secondary.  Americans define ourselves as idealists who believe in making a difference, leaving some mark on the world we live in. Age is secondary. Volunteering often becomes the magic because we do it by choice.  Sometimes its chance that gets us into the right place at the right time. Finding the right fit may take some time.  We have the rest of our lives to find the opportunity and explore it.

Patience is necessary. You may have a specific goal in mind.  The volunteer agency may

have other ideas of volunteer duties.  For example, I am a retired youth services librarian with a Masters in Library and Information Sciences.  I am very willing to assist in all areas of collection management including shelving children’s books and repairing books.  My local branch wants volunteers to shelve the adult services AV collection ONLY, that’s CDs and DVDs. With my consistent volunteering, I earn credibility.  I keep offering to do other projects. Persistence gets acceptance. Now I am assisting in the youth services area!  It only took 18 months.

Well, that’s it for now. Stay tuned there is definitely more to follow. We hope to see you as we journey in our life in retirement.
